Making sense of it all...

1 in 2 teachers are off work with stress or a stress related illness. Nearly the same number of nurses are off sick for the same reason. In effect, human beings in all  professions are off work with stress -but by the time they seek help, stress has become high blood pressure, depression, heart attack or diabetes. So what's stopping you from preventing the serious side of stress?  More...

Symptoms of stress

Stress reactions and the ability to sense danger are necessary for human survival. Good stress makes us perform better, get to the train on time and enjoy sport and other challenges – the feeling of accomplishment, the buzz and exhilaration – is all good stress.

But sometimes it all becomes too much.

Often we think of stress as being major events in our lives - divorce, bereavement, serious illness or losing a job. But it’s a combination of things, or the little things in our everyday life that mount up and really affect us. Not enough time, not enough money, traffic, pressures at work – it all adds up and suddenly you:

  • Find it difficult to relax

  • Can’t sleep

  • Become irritated or

  • Argue more

  • Forget things

  • Start eating more than before, or

  • Lose your appetite

  • Don’t laugh as much as you used to

  • Smoke or drink more

  • Don’t feel motivated

  • Get a feeling that you just can’t cope anymore

  • Stress takes its toll on our bodies as well:

  • · Colds & flu

  • · Headaches and migraines

  • · High blood pressure

  • · Digestive problems

  • · Backache

  • · Muscular tension

How many sessions will I need? How much will it cost?

These questions usually crop up, so here's an answer:

It's impossible to say how many sessions you will need. However, having worked with hundreds of clients, we have found that the average is 6 sessions and £240. You may need only 4 sessions or maybe you need 8...but at least you now have some idea of how much health and happiness will cost you. It's quite a bargain, really.

  • · Chest pains

  • · Stomach ache

  • …and the list goes on.

Stress is more common than the common cold, and fortunately it’s also much easier to treat than a virus.

There are some things you can do for yourself to minimise the effects of stress on your health:

  • Cut down on coffee and tea – drink more water

  • Cut down on chips and fried food – an apple a day, etc…

  • Don’t burn the midnight oil – get a good night’s sleep

  • Exercise – walk a little more every day

  • Many of these symptoms can be felt during short stressful periods and will disappear quickly. In my experience you know your body better than anyone else. In my work as a stress management practitioner, I often ask the client what they believe the reason for their stress to be and an answer or at least a clue will be found. Somewhere you'll know the reason, but some things can seem impossible to manage. It can be work related, family and relationships or personal reasons.

Getting help to understand the reasons puts you on the road to recovery.

With effective stress management you can add quality years to your life. Learning ways of stress relief will pay off in the long run. Many people don’t think of stress management until their lives are seriously affected by it – it just does not seem obvious to take steps to prevent it from happening in the first place.

Developing healthy stress relieving habits staves off the negative effect of stress and it can also bring positive outcomes, like better health, increased energy and more happiness in general.

In Stress Management you will discover:

  • · How to recognise and understand the negative effects of stress

  • · How to minimise stress by acquiring coping skills

  • · Relaxation techniques to reduce tension

  • · Improved well-being through a healthier life style

  • · An increased ability to manage and enjoy life

  • A professional stress management practitioner will work with you to plan your personal stress reduction programme, teach you relaxation methods you can use whenever the need arises and most importantly, will listen to what is important to you.
